I like the way Stumbleupon works with negative votes. It still counts as a vote and the readers of your profile will still see the post as a result. It actually increases exposure of the article. As the posts in Mixx don't show up in a profile unless you have added the contributor to "Your Mixx", exposure stays limited to those who might read it on your profile or under the popular list if the post should go popular. In any case, I believe that it is the net number of positive votes in Mixx that makes a post go popular, so a negative vote could effect the status of the post. That is ok in this democratic environment and nobody is going to do you harm just because you vote something down. They may however, have some harsh feelings. Don't take it seriously. I received a message from Mixx feedback today that says: The key word here is "accountablity". I like that and am looking forward to the day when Mixx implements this function. In the mean time, I think it would be courteous to include a comment with your negative, as well as your positive, votes. There has got to be a reason for your vote and I for one like to read them as well as the posts.

Bart, you seem to be reading my mind. I was just thinking about this today as I was Mixx-ing it up. I've only down-voted one story - because I didn't like the subject matter. Someone called me out on it (rightfully so, I suppose, as it was a decent article). I felt guilty...and now rather than downvoting, I find myself ignoring.
Of course, the opposite has also happened to a story I submitted when someone downvoted what was in my opinion a good news story on the satellite radio industry, and commented "what's satellite radio?"
I would like accountability and can't wait to see it. It would also encourage healthy (I hope) discussions.

Let me tell you what I've observed.
As far as SU is concerned, I have found people that would rather hear honest thumbs-downing than a bunch of smoke blowing.
Smoke blowing gets old.
People have a tendency to put a little more faith in the honesty of a thumbs-downer because they know they are going to get the real scoop, not some phoney.
I just reviewed a guys site about an hour ago because he seems to have a great personality, Iintelligence (Scientist) and a poop-load of thumbs down on his homepage. He fights who he thinks are Spammers.
Definitely Thumbs up for him!
Honesty
Not smoke
I Love it

Sounds like a reasonable suggestion to me. If they posted a ho-hum button to Sphinn, as Barry Welford suggested, that would be excellent as well.

Really great post Len. I definitely agree that if a negative vote is left, then a comment should also be left with an explanation. How else will we learn anything.

Hey Max,
Do you really think that someone that refers to themselves with the word "bear" in their call sign is interested in a popularity contest?
Tell it like it is and they will read...
