What a day! And this will be my third and final post before bed. Everyone has heard of the "Stumbleupon Effect" where a post goes viral and delivers thousands of visits to a web page. This just came to my attention about how Stumbleupon really works and it is dead on. ![]() I suspected that this was the nature of Stumbleupon and have experienced the Stumbleupon effect with my own posts a number of times. Bottom line is a post needs both reviews (socially endorsed content) and thumbs up votes (relevance filtering) to get the attention needed to be sent to the Stumble button on the Stumbleupon toolbar and go viral. The more reviews and votes, the more the web page will show up when somebody Stumbles. Simple huh? I have had to do some campaigning to get both the reviews and the thumbs up necessary, but that can be part of the fun. Especially "sending" a post to 200 friends (the friend limit set by Stumbleupon) one at a time (a tedious process). I have the send process down to about 30 minutes for all 200 of my friends. I think they know this. That is close to 200 visits at a minimum if your friends are paying attention to the forced Stumble sent to them by the "send to" process. One of my posts from today, Social Media - Dealing With The Negative Vote gathered eleven reviews and and 50 thumbs up. The 50 Thumbs up is a record for one of my posts. Analytics is showing 978 unique page views so far. I do not think it is over. The last time I had one like this, it was over 6,000! Still, not a bad return for about an hour of work I think. The diagram works. I would like to thank all of those who vote and especially those who review my posts. Those of you who did both can take the day off tomorrow...I am taking a break from the world of social media to look for a job. I have a spouse that thinks it is necessary for me to have a "real job". I guess I can do both...

Bart,
I follow your posts on StumbleUpon closely to develop a strategy to get traffic to my blog.
I read somewhere that forced stumbles can in time cause fewer organic stumbles from the Great Stumble Machine above. Any thoughts or experience?
Also, have you ever had SU refuse to take initial stumbles for your own site?

Don't quite understand the diagram, Bart. Care to explain the engine parts and what the arrows indicate etc.?

To explain all of the arrows, pieces and parts of this diagram will take some time, and probably an ebook, to explain in detail. Suffice it to say, the purpose of this post was to emphasize the need for peer reviews as well as votes in Stumbleupon. It is written for the lay person. I will consider the idea of an ebook.

Ohhhh, that is a great idea! You should totally write an e-book about Stumble Upon. It would for sure go viral.
Great explanation too.

Maybe after I am done hybernating for the winter...

ReddyK - You have to keep it fresh. I usually just post 1-2 articles or blog posts to Stumbleupon per week that I want traffic to for my own stuff and just to keep my profile in view. These are the ones that I ask my friends to review and vote on to get the Stumble effect. I have not noticed it diminishing. Without asking for a review or vote, I usually get about 20-30 votes anyway and a few reviews. This is enough to get 200-700 visits for one post. But that is nothing. Get 50 votes and 15 reviews at the same time in a good niche and you can get thousands.
Stumbleupon has an automatic spam protection algorithm that will shut a domain down temporarily. I like to keep about a 1/10 ratio from my domain and the other blogs that I post from. I do that with the other social sites to keep the spamming accusations down. Just be courteous with your posts. Make it interesting. Mix it up. Don't just post from one theme.
