The nice thing about social media sites like Digg and Stumbleupon is that it is the masses that make the difference. They are entirely democratic, even if there be a party or two that sway their influence on the results every so often. Still it is fun using them and you are actually able to get to know some of the people as a result of their voting habits and willingness to contact you with a "shout".

Something has come to my attention today that should concern all the members of social media. Nothing motivates, and corrupts, like money and there is a new black market site that is willing to pay you for your Digg and Stumbleupon votes. The site is called Subvert and Profit.

I have been able to get into and review the site. Here is what I found.

The site will email you a number of links, not all of them pay so you will not get the fifty cents per post on every one of the links. The links that do pay are hidden. You go to Digg and Stumbleupon and vote your conscience, they do not tell you how to vote. It is only required that you do vote on every link provided.

You can earn 20% of the earnings for friends that you refer to Subvert and Profit. You can earn 10% of advertising referrals.

What I think is the travesty of this program is that someone who wants their page to hit the front pages of Digg and Stumbleupon can buy this position for $1.00 per vote today. This price may vary. A position on the front page of Digg will cost you about $75.00 according to the site.

I don't know about you, but I think this is a bad idea. They are turning something that is supposed to be social and democratic into a purchased advertisement. This is the corruption of Social media at best.

I kind of think this is a good idea. It's capitalism at its best. Let the system run its course.

I agree this is not a good thing at all. It will be abused just like so many other sites that start out great. Then everything will go downhill fast.

There is a cure for everything, so there will be one for this as well. Digg front page has become a luagh months ago. Stumble upon works very well though.

With about 6 reviews and 30 votes, I can get 1,500 - 2,500 unique page visits from Stumbleupon. This post got over 2,500 pageviews in 24 hours. Guess I hit a nerve.

I don't need to pay anybody for a vote and find it distasteful that anyone would. I also do not want to be told what to vote on. What if I were to "thumbs down" a link that was provided to me in an email. Is my negative vote still worth $1.00? My bet not. Where is the democracy in that?

If you are going to pay for an ad, go over to Google Adwords or Bidvertiser, that is what they are there for.

Just one opinion tho.

Benjamin Sterling asked for the results of my posting to Stumbleupon and Mixx.

There were 2,396 unique visits from Stumbleupon.

there were 81 unique visits from Mixx.

Ok so Mixx has some growing to do.

But why should I pay $1.00 per vote when I have 200 (Stumbleupon) and 600 (Mixx) reliable friends that are more than willing to vote their concience for free. I do not mind a negative vote. Yes, I reciprocate voting with my friends, but I vote and review my concience freely.

They can handle it, so can I...

I think this is a travesty. We are ruining the Internet with our own hands...Spam will kill the net :(
