The principle of podcasting is simple. All you are doing when you podcast is distributing your choice of audio content by means of Really Simple Syndication (more commonly referred to as RSS. It may sound daunting to the uninitiated but it’s not. In fact, you’d be surprised at how really easy it is to do. What podcasting does for listeners and music lovers is give them more control over what music they listen to and when they use it. It’s the ability to use RSS to download the audio that makes this possible. Many of the podcasting resources are syndicated, and that increases the exposure a broadcaster gets.

The four most common uses of podcasting are for loading music demos, for training and instructional materials, to listen to and take part in self guided walking tours, and to listen to talk show such as commentaries and discussions.

Podcasting is an RSS feed that also has either an audio file or an MP3 in its enclosure tag.
Podcasting is simply an RSS feed that contains an MP3 or audio file in the enclosure tag.

If you’ve never done podcasting here is a step by step lesson in how to accomplish it.

The first thing you need to do is start a brand new RSS feed. You’ll give it a title and enter that title for your new podcasting feed. The next podcasting step is to enter your collective description of the entire group of audio files that are going to be in the podcast. The next step is to enter the URL for the Web page or the Web site that you want the podcast associated with. Next you click the Items tab and then the button that says Add Item. You’ll then need to enter your title for this particular audio file or podcast. Enter the description of what is in the audio file. The next podcasting step is to enter the Web page or Web site URL that you want associated with this particular audio file.

Your next step is to click on Optional Tag, then click on the filed that says Enclosure. A list will then drop down automatically. You know enter the Web address of an audio file or MP3 that contains the audio content. Now you have to list the size of the audio file.

The files are either .wav, .mp3, .mid, .mpg. ra. If you’re using .wav the best choice of type is audio / x-way; for .mp3 it is audio/mpeg ; for .mid we recommend audio/midi, for.mpg it would be audio/mpeg and for .ra it would be audio / realaudio.

The final podcasting step is to Save and then use FTP to send the feed to your server.
