Joining a gym can be a big financial investment for many people. Unfortunately the vast majority of people who belong to gyms never go there. To prevent yourself from falling into a similar trap, decide first whether or not you can workout at home. If you can't workout at home, then critically examine the gym before joining. Before deciding to join a gym look at what the alternative is; working out at home. Just by doing bodyweight exercises like pushups, sit-ups, and squats you can get a great workout. For an aerobic workout you can go for a run or bike ride. There are no limits to what type of workout you can do at home. Also, instead of spending your money on a membership, you could invest that money into home workout equipment. The best thing to do here is to look for used exercise equipment. Just look through your paper for an unlimited amount of slightly used exercise equipment. There are also lots of great exercise videos on the market and Youtube has great workout routines available for free. If you do decide to join a gym, only join if it is between your work and your home, or fairly close, otherwise you likely will not go. There is nothing more sad than joining a gym and having to drive by it feeling guilty every time you do because you know you should go workout but don't. Another thing to look for in a gym are the number of members. Drive by the place during the times you think you will workout and see how busy it is. What is the quality of equipment like in the gym? Is it new, or old and not maintained? When you join a gym you expect to be able to use the equipment in a safe manner, you can't do this if the equipment is always broken. Staff is another big one. Some gyms have lots of personal trainers always asking you to sign up for personal training, which gets annoying when you just want to work out. Look around at the staff, do they appear pushy and always trying to up sell you? It is almost always best to try and workout at home before you join a gym. If you do have the discipline to workout at home, you will likely not leave your comfortable house and drive 5 miles to workout.
