- What is a Pyramid Scheme?
A pyramid scheme is illegal, immoral and unethical. In short, one or more individuals at the top of the “pyramid” take money from those at the lower levels of the pyramid. This results in the success of those at the top and the ultimate failure and disappointment of those at the bottom levels of the pyramid.
- Is my Job a Pyramid Scheme?
No, your job is not “technically” a pyramid scheme. But there are similarities.
Firstly, you get paid far less than the person at the “top” in your company. Though, you probably work much harder, longer hours, dealing with more stress than they do. Not only that but your chances of reaching the top position in the company are probably slim to none.
That sounds a lot like a pyramid scheme to me.
You see, with a traditional job, you never have real control over your life. Your boss decides where you live, what kind of car you can drive and where you can go on vacation – because he determines how much he is going to pay you. In reality, he is deciding how much you’re worth.
So how much are you worth and are you being paid accordingly?
Starting your own business gives you complete control. You will have the freedom to work when and where you want for as much income as you can dream.” If you can believe it, you can achieve it!” The sky’s the limit when you become your own boss and stop letting someone else decide how much they’re going to pay you.
Don’t believe me?
I don’t blame you. I really don’t. There is a bunch of junk out there and it can be quite difficult to discern the legitimate opportunities from the fraudulent ones. Which leads me to my final question.
- How Can I Avoid Illegal Pyramid Schemes in Search of a Real Business Opportunity?
Firstly, beware of companies with no products. This is a huge red flag. In companies like these, the money is just being moved around – to the top of the pyramid. A legitimate business will always have a product or service to offer consumers.
Secondly, know what you’re looking for. If an ad promises, “Fast Cash” or conveys a “Get-Rich-Quick” opportunity, avoid it. Things such as, “Work From Home”, “Be Your Own Boss”, “Six-Figure Potential”, are all acceptable and should even be desired. “Network Marketing”, “MLM”, “Multi-Level Marketing”, “Direct Sales” are all acceptable as well. These are simply business structures, nothing illegal.
Lastly, it is important that you view starting your own business as a powerful career move, rather than an attempt at making some extra money with “this deal”. People often say things like, “Oh, you’re looking at one of those things…” and write off your business as a “scheme”. In reality, there is nothing “schemey” about it. People have been owning businesses for thousands of years and they will continue to reap the tremendous awards of business ownership.
Then again, people have been employees for thousands of years too.
The results are in.
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Why? Because the rich own businesses and the poor work for them.
