The first feature which is probably the most important one for all beginning users would be the wysiwyg. Also known as "what you see is what you get", this feature basically shows the changes of your website as you're making it. By doing this there is no need for you to learn so much about the HTML language and there is no need to preview your website since it's already done for you. Although it is great for starting users this feature comes with compatibility issues among certain software.
The main problem is regarding the previewing of your website through your software. In some cases like Microsoft FrontPage, the preview you get from your wysiwyg will not necessarily be the same over all Internet browsers. This means if you have compatibility issues your website may not appear properly on some browsers which will cause you to lose valuable visitors. if that's the case then you need to add a few codes in your source code to make it eventually compatible with all browsers. Another important aspect would be the language support.
No, I'm not talking about spoken languages. I'm talking about online languages such as PHP, HTML, ASP, Java and the list goes on. If you plan on making a simple website using the HTML markup language may be just enough for you but if you plan on doing a website with multiple functions and complex programming you may need to resort to more advanced languages such as PHP or Java. In most cases HTML will suffice. Since there are a lot of features on most softwares you may want to have a convenient software to ease your work.
The more convenient to website design software is the more expensive it will cost you. The other part of the equation is the more features you have the more it will cost you also. Having to repeat the same task over and over again can become pretty hard if you need to go through many steps which is why more convenient softwares can usually remember what your last actions were and with a simple click of a button you can do the whole process again.
When you are designing a website it's mostly because you want the visitor to be attracted by it. Remember though this only attracts human visitors and not robot visitors so if you plan on getting good rankings through the search engines no matter how many website design software you use it won't matter if your site doesn't have great content.
