Ability, Motivation, Attitude: Three Important Key Components to a Successful Business...

"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." By: Lou Holtz: Former football coach, author, motivational speaker.

Regardless of whether it is sports or business this quote by the legendary football coach Lou Holtz really sums up how you should be looking at building your business.

If you are thinking of starting your own business or maybe you already are a new entrepreneur, you need to develop this mindset. It is this mindset that will help propel you to each new level in your business and increase your chances of success.

What really are your abilities? If you can not answer this off the top of your head that is alright as many people really need to do some soul searching for what they are actually good at it. Chances are you are no different. Sit down and define what your abilities are. What do you excel at? What do you enjoy so much that it makes the ability of what you do that much better?

These are very important questions to ask yourself as you define your strengths and weaknesses. We all have strengths, the things we excel at, and we all have weaknesses, those things that we struggle with. If you can clearly define what both of these are, it will help determine the type of people, technology or anything else that will help your business, that you need to bring in to complement you.

For example, if you are good at developing software code yet hate keeping accounting books, what type of person do you need to help you out? This one is easy, an accountant, right? Find out what your weaknesses are and then develop your plan to overcome them. Many are not as easy as this example, then again sometimes they are.

Now that you have determined that your ability will define your strengths and weaknesses and that you can overcome them, how do you get motivated every day to keep going even when things look bad?

To get and stay motivated you need to determine what your goals are. What are you trying to accomplish? What is the end result of all of your hard work? I can tell you that if it is simply money, you won't stay motivated for long. The reason is no one goes from broke to billionaire fast enough when the motivation is money. You will lose your motivation rather quickly.

Ask yourself what your business, products or services actually do to help people. Does it make them do something faster? Does it make life easier? Does it help a business produce more? Only you can answer these questions. Keep in mind to answer them honestly. Once you know the answers you stay motivated by tracking your own progress as you get closer to the end result.

For a number of years I developed software in the pharmaceutical industry. I knew when the software product was completed it would be used to collect and analyze data on new drug discoveries. Sure I like to write code and made a nice living doing it, but the motivation was to see these products get to market and watch them in use. Knowing that new drugs were discovered that helped people fight diseases and other ailments was a huge motivation for me. Find out what yours does. That will be motivation enough for you.

The final piece of this puzzle is your attitude. As Lou Holtz puts it, this will determine how well you do it, whatever it is. This one is simple. You need to keep telling yourself that whatever it is your business does regardless of whether it is a product or service, your name is forever stamped on it. That product or service is a reflection of you and who you are. If it is an awesome product people are going to think more highly of you. If it is a product or service that isn't so good, chances are your customers won't come back and more than likely not recommend you to others.

Combine these three efforts in your business will go a long way to helping your products sell and your services get hired.
