Cat On A Hot Tin Roof has been released in three versions. The first version was shown on Broadway in 1955, when it managed to attract a colossal crowd. In 1958, MGM released the movie version of this story. And now, in 2008, this story is once again here to move the audience with its splendid show of family emotions.
Although the original production of this show did not receive any Tony Award, Tennessee Williams received plenty of applause for his work. The play was so appreciated that Williams grabbed a Pulitzer Prize for it!
“Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” is all about a sour marriage between Maggie “The Cat” and Brick Pollitt. On the occasion of 65th birthday of the patriarch of the family, Big Daddy, the couple gets an opportunity to interact with each member of Pollitt family. Actually, everyone is more interested in amassing a greater share of Big Daddy’s wealth than knowing about each other.
The play is a fearless description of taboo topics like homosexuality prevalent in the Southern society. Also, it gives a picture of rivalry that crop up between the members of a family due to misunderstandings. It also represents the sufferings of the family patriarch on account of the deadly disease cancer.
Jane Greenwood has designed costumes that wholly complement each character. Ray Klausen has designed the sets to give a realistic picture to the entire story. Debbie Allen, the director of this show, has added another feather in her cap through this show.
Her previous directorial stunts include many television series; including the popular “That’s So Raven”. She also performs on-stage and has won Tony as well as Emmy nominations for her acting skills. In “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof”, Debbie Allen has intelligently transformed the words of a book into live characters on stage!
