To run a successful business, you have to understand the reasons that people have for going to a business to satisfy their needs instead of taking care of their problems on their own. When trying to carry out a particular task or satisfy a particular need, a business can have a significant advantage over the individual. Let’s look at some simple business management tips that illustrate how a business has an advantage when it comes to satisfying certain types of needs. We can divide the reasons that people look to businesses to help them into five general categories. These categories are that people sometimes: do not know how to do something, do not have the time to do something, do not have the tools or resources to do something, do not want to do something, or think that it would be more efficient for someone else to do something. People use businesses for each of these reasons. Here are some examples on a case by case basis. First, people sometimes go to businesses for help because they do not know how to do something. By buying a microwave dinner, someone who does not know how to cook can enjoy a high quality meal just by putting a box inside the oven and waiting for a couple minutes. If your car breaks down and you do not know how to fix it, you go to someone who knows how – if you need your suit tailored and you do not know how to do it, you go to someone who knows how. So, if you have a particular skill or knowledge that others do not have, a business is a good way to help others with your ability. Second, people make use of businesses because they do not have the time to do something on their own. You might be able to figure out how to do your taxes on your own if you had the time to sit down and read the forms long enough, but many people simply do not have the time (or do not want to spend the time) and give their receipts and forms to their accountant or a company that specializes in tax returns. The company can do it quickly and is paid for their help. Third, people use businesses because they do not have the tools to do something on their own. If your car breaks down, even if you have a good idea of what is wrong with your car fixing it may require certain tools that you do not have in your garage at home. By taking it to a place where they have the tools you can get it fixed. You pay the mechanic not only for his expertise but for the use of the tools that the mechanic has. Fourth, people go to businesses because there are things they do not want to do. Maybe you can lubricate your car on your own, or maybe you can cook dinner on your own, but you might want to do something else instead of that and just pay to have it taken care of for you by someone professional. Finally, people will go to a business because it is simply more efficient for a business to handle the situation for them. Because businesses bring together the talent, tools and knowledge to quickly handle a task, they can often do it faster and easier than people can on their own. By understanding the reasons that people choose to go to businesses for help, you can improve your own company and enjoy greater success!
