The Story Of A Life
The play Thurgood was written by George Stevens Jr. and depicts the life of Thurgood Marshall, the very first African-American to serve on the American Supreme Court. Its premiere performance had the very formidable James Earl Jones in the lead and since then, it has been a staple for theater-goers all around the country. People line up for Thurgood tickets either for the inspired story, or to see the amazing performances on stage.
Thurgood Marshall's influence goes far beyond the Supreme Court. He was also a key figure in the civil rights movement and gained a reputation for being one of the most passionate civil rights activists in the country. Interestingly enough, despite having the name Mr. Civil Rights, Marshall only saw himself as a lawyer. What he did believe in was fighting for the rights of the oppressed and the minorities, no matter which color they were. This is what has made him such a powerful figure today- the fact that this was in a time when race was such a sensitive issue, Marshall strove to see beyond it.

As a play, it has quietly carved a niche for itself as a piece that doesn't wow with lots of fancy props and fast-paced songs. Today, it seems like every theater show must have lots of special effects, extensive choreography and foot-tapping numbers to make it a hit. To be honest, Thurgood has none of these things and yet, it manages to pack more of a punch than many other plays.
Thurgood is basically a one-man show and relies heavily on how well the main character can carry the role. That's why heavyweights such as James Earl Jones and Laurence Fishburne have been roped in to play the role of Thurgood. Fishburne has done such an exemplary interpretation of the character that he picked up both the 2007-2008 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance and the 2007-2008 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. This has been just another reason for playgoers to rush for their Thurgood tickets.
The play is told from the point of view of Thurgood as an old man. Born and raised in the volatile times of the Jim Crow laws, Thurgood's rise to the top was not an easy one. The play touches on his struggles and successes, his dreams and his failures, his hopes and his bitterness. At the end of the play, we don't just get a better picture of Thurgood, the legend. We also get a touching portrayal of Thurgood, the man.
