In the last 10 years or so, the cost of a college education has skyrocketed. Most parents and students of late aren’t able to handle these high cost, so taking out student loans and personal loan have these parents and students falling into debt. The average college student graduates from college with an average a $22,000 debt. After graduation, it takes students an average of 15 years to pay off their debt.

But fortunately for students and parents who are, or have their children in college or online schools, there are a multitude of financial aid opportunities available. One of the best ways to help one pay for college is to get a scholarship or grant. Scholarships are not only available for A-students and low income students. In this day and age almost everyone is eligible for some type of money grant.

When searching for a college or grant it is necessary for one to know what scholarships and grants are and how they are obtained. Scholarships are usually given out based on scholastic achievement. Awarding the scholarship to individuals at the top of their particular field. Grants are usually given out based upon a needed basis. Giving the grant to an individual based upon their given situation. But factors such as gender, your field of study, career plans, minority stats, and location are all factors in being awarded both a scholarship or grant.

The main and best source of getting a college grant is from the federal government. To apply one must just submit a free application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA. With in a matter of days you will be informed if you are eligible for a Pell grant or a grant given to you by the school. Even private grant foundations require one to fill out and submit this form.

When it comes to scholarships, most scholarships are given out at the time of high school graduation. A high school student looking to get any particular scholarship should start applying for them in their junior year. This is necessary because some colleges require the scholarship to be submitted one year prior to your first semester. Other factors of time fall into the process of getting a scholarship such as, the length of application forms, contact information being collected, essay writing, and even scheduling interviews. So getting on top of this right away is what you have to do.

So when looking for a scholarship there are a few specific places to look. First you want to start in your local community. Such as your local church, library, guidance counselors office, or even any local corporation that may offer one. Then the next step will be to contact your college’s financial aid office you are applying for. They can give you tons of information on awards that you might not find listed. Then finally you want you search the internet. Just use your favorite search engine to find the best, “Scholarship Search Site” for you. Then you can look through the thousands of awards they have indexed based upon your specifics.

Getting your college education funded isn’t easy and it takes a bit of time. Just don’t get frustrated and dedicated your time to a sound plan of research and you will be able to optimize your educational dollar.
