Still Going Strong: How Wii Revolutionized Gaming...

Nintendo’s been on a slump for a few years with their previously outdated console designs. But on 2006, the release of their newest gaming console Wii showed that Nintendo has come so far from the Family Computer concept and still has a lot of conquering to do.

One of the most unique things about Wii is that it doesn’t use the usual controllers shaped like a boomerang. Instead, it uses a wireless remote called the Wii Remote that can be used to detect movement to manipulate the menus and the game. One of the most popular games is the Wii Tennis, which lets the player move not only his arms but also his torso to control the character when hitting the virtual ball. Wii also allows for multiple players depending on the game being played. With the wireless controller, players aren’t limited on their actual space, so they can be meters away from their opponents but still manipulate the game accordingly.

Besides the Wii Remote, the wi-fi on the Nintendo DS also allows you to use your DS as a controller for the Wii. With the Nintendo DS’s touchscreen LCD, this has widened the Wii gameplays, giving players the option of using whichever controller they wish. Another interesting peripheral for Wii is the Wii Fit Balance Board, with games that are more exercise to the players. This has the intention for the players to measure their weigh and probably lose a few pounds.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are recognizing this revolution, though. Xbox 360 have recently introduced wireless controllers to their players. PS3 has also followed suit, removing their wired controllers and coming up with their latest controller, Dual Shock 3, which is not only wireless but brings back the rumbling feature of the controllers. Certainly, these consoles are gearing up with the ideas brought about by Wii’s release. The gaming world is changing, and Wii was there right from the beginning.
