The Rise of Rebeck
Mauritus broadway may be Rebeck's first foray into big time theater, but it is by no means her first. For those, who keep their ear to the theater scene, Rebeck's name will be a familiar one from the off-Broadway circuit. Plays like Spike Heels, Bad Dates, and The Scene have all made big waves on the theater scene. Apart from that, her work Omnium Gatherum was a finalist for the prestigious Pulitzer Prize.
However, plays are not the only thing that Rebeck dabbles in. The prolific writer has also dabbled in television, penning shows like NYPD Blue, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and she was also worked on the movie Harriet the Spy. Apart from all this, Rebeck also found the time to write a few books, included a published volume of her plays.
Make Way for Mauritus
The reasons why so many people want to see Mauritus broadway are numerous. For one thing, this is Rebeck's first ever Broadway play and it is the only debut original written by a woman hitting the stage this season. Given the repertoire of Rebeck's past work, the expectations for this play are very high, with the play already winning the 2007 IRNE Award for Best New Play and the Eliot Norton Award.
Another reason why this play is causing such as stir is because of the stellar cast. So often, a great piece of theater will be completely overlooked, because the cast simply cannot carry the piece. At other times, the cast is so high profile that it shadows the actual play completely. The cast for Mauritus broadway strike a perfect balance here. Bobby Cannavale, who recently picked up an Emmy for his work in Will & Grace and has been seen in numerous movies, plays a minor con man and stamp collector. Allison Pill, who plays one of the sisters in the story, was recently commended with a Tony nomination for her work in The Lieutenant of Inishmore. She also won the Lucille Lortel Award for her role in On the Mountain. She was also featured in the hit movie, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
The story behind Mauritus broadway is delivered in a style reminiscent of Mamet and has a healthy helping of comedy, thrills, and mystery. Two half sisters have lost their mother and are also not on the best of terms. While one sister clears out her mother's possessions, she comes across a rare stamp collection. Not only does the other sister immediately arrive, saying that the collection is rightfully hers, but three desperate collectors also arrive in search of the stamps. What follows is an interesting glimpse into the forces of desperation that sometimes drive us.
