Among all the Broadway musicals, “South Pacific” has the most powerful songs and a thought provoking storyline. What happens when people fall in love with each other during a war? Do they remain under the mercy of the wrath of war? Or can they emerge as winners? “South Pacific” has created history not only for its love story interwoven with war-time, but also for highlighting the taboo topics of racism and prejudice. Eyebrows were raised. Creators were pressurized. However, there emerged a musical story that created history and became one of the greatest musicals on Broadway. The author of the book “Tales of the South Pacific” had to ask the creators of the musical, Hammerstein and Rodgers, to remove the song “You’ve got to be carefully taught” because it contained certain harsh comments on racism. Last shown in 1949 at the Majestic Theater, “South Pacific” is again ready to set the stage on fire by its blatant expression of emotions at the Vivian Beamont Theater on April 4, 2008. It’s nearly after 6 decades that the audience will get a chance to see the marvelous work of Richard Rodgers (music composer), Oscar Hammerstein II (lyricist), and James A. Michener (original writer of the book). In 1948, the book won Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, while in 1950, the musical won Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It’s also the only musical of its kind to win four Tony Awards! The story is set in the backdrop of World War II. It revolves around two couples who fall in love with each other amidst war. Nellie is a nurse in the US Navy while Emile is an owner of local plantation. They both love each other. On the other hand, Lt. Joe Cable and young local Liat start loving each other. Now, the big question is: Will the two couples get a chance to live their love or will the cruel war take over them? Among the Broadway musicals, “South Pacific” is one of the most intriguing love stories that you can ever see. The issue of racism and prejudices is handled with care and intelligence in this musical. Although the story makes you to think about certain issues, overall, it’s an entertainer. Watch the show with your family or watch alone; watch with your friends or take your partner with you – do whatever, but watch this show! It’s a strong love story; in fact, there are two short stories blended as one. The tickets to the Broadway musical “South Pacific” are already starting to vanish from the box office! If you don’t want to be disappointed, rush to book your tickets. There are also easier ways to get to the theater – call a number or log online. The ticketing services will see to it that you get tickets of your choice show, even front row seats! So, are you ready to know the realities of war? Do you want to know what happens to love when it takes place during a war? If yes, then pick your phone now and book!
