Previewed on February 12, 2008 and opened on March 6 at the Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre, this play is all African-American depiction of family life. Debbie Allen has debuted as the director on Broadway through this play.
Allen is known for her impeccable direction of several TV shows like “Everybody Hates Chris”, “Girlfriends”, “A Different World”, and “That’s So Raven.” Besides this, Allen has also acted in shows like “Sweet Charity”, “West Side Story”, “Ain’t Misbehavin”, and “Raisin.” Her performances have bagged her two Tony nominations. Her role of Lydia Grant in the TV show “Fame” had made her a star and lent her three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe!

The occasion is 65th birthday of the patriarch of the Pollitt family – Big Daddy. He’s a tycoon, plus he has cancer!

There is another side to the story, which portrays a sour relationship between a husband and wife. The husband is Brick Pollit, who is a fading football star. The wife is Maggie “The Cat” who had escaped from a dark childhood to marry into the affluent Politt family. However, her marriage has everything except love! On the occasion of Big Daddy’s birthday, the husband and wife duo interact with all the members of the Pollitt family.
How each one lies to one another is worth a watch. The Doctor and the whole family lies to Big Daddy. Big Daddy lies to Big Mamma. Brick lies to Maggie. Other members lie to each other. This creates a lot of misunderstanding amongst all. Hidden rivalries also come to light on the occasion.
A complete family entertainer, “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof” is a show that you must watch for an ingenious portrayal of each character on stage.
