The Colonial Theatre is the oldest operating theatre of Boston. If you wanna watch some of the best Broadway musicals, then this theatre is the place to be, along with the Wilbur Theatre and the Opera House that has been renovated recently. The Charles Playhouse is well-known for off-Broadway entertainment.
Then there’s the Huntington Theatre Company at Boston University. It’s a non-profit organization and has bagged three nominations for Tony Award for its productions that were transferred to Broadway.
If you’re in Boston at this time of the year, you have got a chance to attend the thrilling Boston Theatre Marathon that set off on May 11, 2008. In a stretch of 10 hours, 50 new plays were shown by 50 theatre companies. All the plays were by Boston area playwrights. The Marathon commenced at 12 noon and ended at 10pm.
This was a unique event for the Boston Theatre. All the plays were of 10 minute duration and were shown to standing-room-only audience. The playwrights were a mixed bunch of talented souls; some of them were famous, some were unknown, while some were aspiring stars. The complete Boston theatre community was present at this enthralling event. Some of the Boston’s most celebrated directors and actors shared stage space at this Marathon. It was a ‘high’ time for the theatre fans, as they got an opportunity to watch a plethora of celebrities at one time, at one place.
In 2004, The Boston Theatre Marathon won the Boston’s Best award for “Best Original Programming” by the Improper Bostonian. The 2008 Marathon was funded by the Humanities Foundation of Boston University.
Now, now, don’t cry, if you missed this grand event! There’s still an alternative. Get a Boston theater ticket for any of the earlier mentioned shows and soak in the entertainment. You can get tickets either from the box office or from the ticketing services. Some of you might want to skip the former choice, as there’s a possibility that you’ll be greeted with a long queue of theatre fans.
